Rev. Phil Fenton, Administrative/Senior Pastor
My wife Carol and I have been married for 44 years and have 3 grown children who live and work in Houston, Texas / Los Angeles, California / and Kansas City, Kansas. I was born in Longview, Texas and was educated at East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas (BS in Psychology), and Luther Theological Seminary in St.Paul,Minnesota (Master of Divinity). A Scripture passage that inspires me, defines me and compels me: Matthew 25:38-40
‘When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply,’I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did for me.’
Life Convictions: “The only important things we do are those things we do for others.” – and –
“The Church of Jesus Christ exists for one reason only: to give its life away for the neighbor in need.”
Rev. Briana Merkle, Associate Pastor
Hello there, I go by Pr. Bri and am serving at St. Paul’s in my first role as a pastor, having recently graduated from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, CA. I moved to Texas along with my husband Kyle who serves as pastor as St. John Lutheran Church Prairie Hill. We just got married in Tacoma, WA where I grew up. And we are so excited to get settled into our lives together and our jobs here in Brenham, TX.
The last few years I’ve found myself drawn into looking at my own faith development. One of my mantras has become “Be still and know that I am God” (Ps 46.10). I love to be active and busy doing things, yet my faith helps me to find the peace, awareness and gratitude in life that can only come from God. As a pastor, I am excited to work on discovering this renewal from God in the church and in our own lives.
“Seek the welfare of the community where I have sent you, and pray on its behalf, for in its welfare you will also find your welfare.” Jeremiah 29.7
Director of Music Ministries and Artist in Residence, Erich L. Knapp
I was raised in a Christian home in which participation in worship, Christian education and the church music program was expected. I have striven to never separate my life of faith from my employment, but to do everything to the glory of God.
I am blessed with a very successful and varied career in music as an organist, recitalist, choir director, composer, and educator in public school, university and church work settings. My degrees include a MM in choral conducting with organ as my primary instrument, and a nearly completed a DMA in choral conducting with organ as my primary instrument.
I am very mindful of the pastoral dimension of my position. I believe that in order to be effective in a call at St. Paul’s I must be a minister first and a musician second.
